The opportunity to be physically active in a fun and safe community gathering is critical to the Governor’s Council on Physical Fitness mission of establishing California as the “nation’s fitness state”.  The City of Rancho Santa Margarita’s Healthy Community Expo, 5k and Kids Fun Run is an event that contributes to the physical activity, fitness levels and well-being of Californians whom reside in Rancho Santa Margarita. This event is held annually on Labor Day. The event fosters community spirit, as well as educating the public regarding health and wellness. The Healthy Community Expo portion of the event connects all concerned businesses and organizations to our residents as they strive to improve the health and future of our society. 

Because of the current childhood obesity issues, more is being asked of public and non-profit recreation activity programs that have major access to the youth population. The inclusion of the Healthy Kids Fun Run is an opportunity for children to be introduced to fitness and participate in a community event.  The route was just under a half mile and followed the sidewalks around Civic Plaza through Central Park.  Each child received an event t-shirt and a medal of accomplishment.
