Basic Cyber Safety Tips for Home Users

  • Use antivirus software
    • Install and maintain antivirus software to protect against malware and viruses.
  • Back up your data
    • Back up data on a regular basis.
  • Don't share personal information
    • Don't give out your social security number, credit or debit card information, medical information, or other personal data over the phone or online unless you can trust the requester.

Online Shopping:

  • Shop on reputable websites.
    • Stick to well-known, reputable online retailers.
    • Look for "https://" in the URL, indicating a secure connection.
  • Be wary of Too-Good-To-Be-True deals
    • If an offer seems too good to be true, it probably is.
    • Research the seller and the deal.

Social Media Safety:

  • Limit personal information
    • Be cautious about sharing personal information on social media. Scammers can use this information to target you.
  • Adjust privacy settings
    • Use privacy settings to control who can see your posts and personal information.

Financial Safety:

  • Monitor financial accounts regularly
    • Check your bank and credit card statements regularly for any unauthorized transactions.
  • Be cautious with investments
    • Be wary of unsolicited investment opportunities.
    • Research thoroughly and consult with a financial advisor.

Reporting Scams:

  • Report suspicious activity
    • If you encounter a scam, report it to the relevant authorities such as the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) at ReportFraud.ftc.gov, Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI)at ic3.gov, or local law enforcement.
  • Inform family and friends
    • Share information about scams with family and friends to help protect them.
