Basic Cyber Safety Tips for Home Users
General Online Safety Tips:
- Use strong passwords
- Create strong, unique passwords for each account.
- Use a mix of letters, numbers, and special characters.
- Consider using a password manager to keep track of them.
- Enable Two-Factor Authentication
- This adds an extra layer of security by requiring a second form of verification in addition to your password.
- Keep software updated
- Regularly update your operating system, browsers, and other software to protect against security vulnerabilities.
- Use antivirus software
- Install and maintain antivirus software to protect against malware and viruses.
- Back up your data
- Back up data on a regular basis.
- Don't share personal information
- Don't give out your social security number, credit or debit card information, medical information, or other personal data over the phone or online unless you can trust the requester.
Online Shopping:
- Shop on reputable websites.
- Stick to well-known, reputable online retailers.
- Look for "https://" in the URL, indicating a secure connection.
- Be wary of Too-Good-To-Be-True deals
- If an offer seems too good to be true, it probably is.
- Research the seller and the deal.
Social Media Safety:
- Limit personal information
- Be cautious about sharing personal information on social media. Scammers can use this information to target you.
- Adjust privacy settings
- Use privacy settings to control who can see your posts and personal information.
Financial Safety:
- Monitor financial accounts regularly
- Check your bank and credit card statements regularly for any unauthorized transactions.
- Be cautious with investments
- Be wary of unsolicited investment opportunities.
- Research thoroughly and consult with a financial advisor.
Reporting Scams:
- Report suspicious activity
- If you encounter a scam, report it to the relevant authorities such as the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) at ReportFraud.ftc.gov, Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI)at ic3.gov, or local law enforcement.
- Inform family and friends
- Share information about scams with family and friends to help protect them.
